Andoni Iraola confirmed on Tuesday that he will leave the Vitality Stadium when his contract expires in June. He told the players himself before the announcement went public. Chairman Bill Foley released a statement. Tiago Pinto, the club’s Head of Football Operations, did the same. Everyone was gracious. Everyone was disappointed.

“This is the right moment for me to step away,” Iraola said.

For a club that has spent three years watching him quietly build something remarkable on the south coast, it is a difficult goodbye.

What He Built at Bournemouth

When Iraola arrived from Rayo Vallecano in June 2023, Bournemouth were a club trying to find stability in the Premier League. They had just survived under Gary O’Neil but needed an identity and a clear way of playing.

He gave them both.

In his first season, Bournemouth finished 12th. Not spectacular on paper, but the performances told a different story. They pressed higher, moved faster and competed against top sides in a way that turned heads. In 2024/25, they went to ninth, their highest ever finish in the top flight. This season, despite his impending departure, they are 11th and still in the hunt for European qualification, sitting two points below seventh place with games remaining.

They also beat Arsenal 2-1 at the Emirates last weekend, on the same week the news of Iraola’s exit broke. That result, and the manner of it, summed up everything he has done at the club.

Foley acknowledged it in his statement. “Andoni has been instrumental in shaping the direction of this football club over the past three seasons. He brought intensity, innovation, and a clear philosophy that elevated AFC Bournemouth both on and off the pitch.”

Pinto added: “His attention to detail, tactical intelligence and ability to bring the best out of players is something we have seen every day.”

The Decision Was Not Easy

Iraola was honest about how much this cost him personally.

“I have had moments thinking one thing and at other moments thinking the other thing,” he said. “But there is a moment, you know? I was talking with the club all season and we have been very open. I think it definitely has not been a surprise for them. But it has been difficult, yes.”

He was also clear that no other club drove the decision. Reports had emerged linking him to Crystal Palace, with talk of a multi-million-pound offer already on the table. La Liga and Bundesliga clubs were also said to be interested. Iraola dismissed all of it.

“The decision was not about any other club. There has been no other club involved. It was about continuing here or not continuing here,” he said.

He spent 12 years as a player at Athletic Bilbao, making over 500 appearances for the club. With Ernesto Valverde set to leave San Mames at the end of the season, a return to the Basque Country has been mentioned. Whether he goes back to Spain or takes on a bigger challenge elsewhere, nobody yet knows.

“I have no idea what is going to happen,” he said. “I don’t know if you are going to believe me, but it is the truth.”

What Comes Next for Bournemouth

The club has already started planning for life without him.

Marco Rose, former manager of RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund, is understood to be among a shortlist of three candidates being considered for the role. Kieran McKenna of Ipswich Town has also been mentioned as a serious option.

Bournemouth will finish this season with six games remaining under Iraola’s charge. European football is still possible. If they reach the Conference League, it would be the first time in the club’s entire history that they have competed in European competition.

That would be some way to go out.

Iraola leaves as one of the most respected coaches in the Premier League. He took a mid-table club, gave them a philosophy and consistently outperformed what the resources around him suggested was possible. Wherever he goes next, that reputation goes with him.

Bournemouth, meanwhile, face one of the more important summers in their recent history. Marco Rose has since been confirmed as his replacement. Finding a manager to continue what Iraola started is not a small task.

They know what good looks like now. That is both a gift and a burden.

Update: Iraola Is the New Liverpool Manager

When Iraola said he had no idea what was coming next, he may have been telling the truth at the time. Things moved very quickly after that.

Liverpool sacked Arne Slot on Saturday following a trophyless 2025/26 season in which the Dutchman steadily lost the support of the fanbase and the confidence of the club hierarchy. Within 48 hours, talks with Iraola had escalated and a deal was in place.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed it on Monday: “Andoni Iraola, set to become the next Liverpool manager. Agreement in principle reached. Here we go.”

Ben Jacobs backed it up: “Liverpool are finalising a deal to appoint Andoni Iraola as their new manager. Terms are now in place and work is being done on backroom staff.”

The connection between Iraola and Liverpool is not accidental. Richard Hughes, now Liverpool’s sporting director, was the man who originally brought Iraola to English football when he was at Bournemouth. Hughes knows exactly what he is getting. He watched it happen from inside the building for two years.

Liverpool want to make the announcement before the World Cup begins on June 11. The formal unveiling is expected within days.

Iraola is set to bring assistant Tommy Elphick, a lifelong Liverpool supporter, with him to Anfield as part of his backroom staff.

For the man who three years ago was managing Rayo Vallecano in La Liga, the journey has been something else entirely. Bournemouth to Liverpool. South coast to Anfield. One of the most respected jobs in world football now sits in front of him.

He spent all that time saying he did not know what came next. Turns out the answer was hiding in plain sight the whole time.
