Three years ago, Ansu Fati was wearing the number 10 shirt at Barcelona. The one Lionel Messi left behind. That is how much they believed in him.

On Tuesday, Barcelona confirmed they have agreed to sell him to AS Monaco for €11 million. It is a number that tells you everything about how far this story has travelled from where it began.

Monaco activated the buy option written into Fati’s season-long loan agreement last summer. The deal is now effectively done, though both clubs are still finalising the sell-on clause. Barcelona want a substantial percentage of any future sale. Monaco have offered 10 percent. That negotiation is ongoing, but the transfer itself is not in doubt. Barcelona need everything wrapped up before June 30 to help them return to La Liga’s 1:1 financial registration rule.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed the agreement is in place.

What Went Wrong at Barcelona

Fati’s story at Barcelona is genuinely sad if you followed it closely.

He made his senior debut in August 2019 at 16 years and 298 days old. In December of that year, he became the youngest goalscorer in Champions League history when he headed home a winner against Inter Milan at 17 years and 40 days. The comparisons to Messi started almost immediately, which in hindsight was the worst thing that could have happened to him.

Then came the injuries. A serious knee injury in November 2020 kept him out for almost ten months. He came back, picked up more problems, and never fully regained the sharpness that made him so exciting in the first place. By 2024/25, Hansi Flick simply did not have him in his plans. He made 11 appearances all season without scoring a single goal.

For a player who was once given Messi’s shirt, that is a brutal place to find yourself.

The loan to Monaco last summer was a lifeline. Barcelona needed him off the wage bill. Fati, earning around €7 million net per season, needed football. The move made sense for both sides.

What He Did at Monaco

Fati took the chance.

In 30 appearances across all competitions for Monaco this season, he scored 12 goals. He played with a freedom that had been missing from his game for years. Away from the pressure of Camp Nou, away from the constant comparisons, he looked like a footballer who remembered he was good at this.

Monaco noticed. They are not activating this buy option out of obligation. They want him. At 23, they believe there is still a player worth investing in, and his season backed that belief up.

What This Means for Barcelona

Beyond the football, this deal is about numbers.

The €11 million fee plus the removal of Fati’s salary gives Barcelona close to €20 million in financial relief heading into the summer. That money feeds directly into their ability to register new signings under La Liga’s strict wage cap rules. It is not glamorous, but it matters.

There is also the sell-on clause. Barcelona inserting that into the agreement shows they have not completely given up on the idea that Fati could be worth more someday. If Monaco sell him in three years for €40 million, Barcelona want their cut. It is smart business from a club that knows they produced something special, even if it did not work out the way anyone hoped.

A Fresh Start at 23

Fati was born in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau, on October 31, 2002. He moved to Seville at six, joined Barcelona’s famous La Masia academy at ten, and was playing in the first team at sixteen. His rise was one of the most exciting stories in European football.

The chapter at Barcelona is over. At Monaco, with regular football and far less weight on his shoulders, there is every reason to believe the best of Ansu Fati is still ahead of him.

He just needs to stay fit.
