Casemiro Set to Join Inter Miami After Manchester United Exit, But There Are Hurdles to Clear
Casemiro has chosen Inter Miami after leaving Manchester United. But LA Galaxy's discovery rights and a full DP roster could still block the deal.

Casemiro has made his decision. After four seasons at Manchester United, the Brazilian is leaving Old Trafford when his contract expires on June 30, and Inter Miami is where he wants to go next.
The 34-year-old announced in January that he would not be extending his deal with United. Since then, several clubs have been in contact. LA Galaxy made their move in March. Saudi clubs came with financial offers. European clubs including Inter Milan were tracking him. But according to ESPN, The Athletic and Fabrizio Romano, Casemiro’s preference was always Miami, and Inter Miami have now submitted a formal offer to make it happen.
The pull is obvious. Lionel Messi is there. The lifestyle in South Florida suits his family. And at this stage of his career, a different kind of football challenge away from the pressure of European competition makes sense for a player who has already won everything the game has to offer.
What He Achieved at United
When Casemiro arrived from Real Madrid in the summer of 2022 for around £60 million, he was supposed to bring exactly what United were missing. Leadership. Experience. The ability to protect a defence and control a midfield at the same time.
It was complicated. His first season was strong and he helped United win the EFL Cup and the FA Cup. But the second and third seasons, under a club that was restructuring at every level, were far harder. He made 159 appearances in total, scored 26 goals and contributed to two domestic trophies.
He leaves with his reputation largely intact, which given everything that happened at Old Trafford during his time there, is no small achievement.
The Complications Standing in the Way
The deal is not done yet, and the obstacles are real.
The first problem is the LA Galaxy. When Galaxy contacted Casemiro in March, they registered him on their MLS discovery list. Under league rules, that means they now hold his discovery rights, which prevents Inter Miami from negotiating directly with the player until those rights are acquired. Miami will need to do a separate deal with LA Galaxy first. It is a procedural hurdle rather than an impossible one, but it needs to be resolved before anything else moves forward.
The second problem is the Designated Player slot. Inter Miami currently have all three of their DP spots filled by Lionel Messi, Rodrigo De Paul and German Berterame. Casemiro, as a player of his profile and salary expectations, would normally require one of those slots. Miami’s plan, according to Goal.com, is to use the same approach they took with Jordi Alba in 2023, bringing him in through Targeted Allocation Money first and then elevating him to DP status once a slot becomes available.
The MLS secondary transfer window, which runs from July 13 to September 2, is the realistic timeframe for this deal to be completed.
What Casemiro Brings to Miami
Inter Miami midfielder Telasco Segovia was asked about the transfer reports and did not hide his enthusiasm. He said Casemiro would give the team so much, pointing to the balance, leadership and winning mentality he would bring to a squad that is already competitive but still hunting for consistency.

Those words mean something. Segovia plays in the same position and knows exactly what adding a player of Casemiro’s calibre would change about the team’s dynamic.
At 34, Casemiro is not the same defensive force he was at Real Madrid, where he formed one of the most celebrated midfield trios in football history alongside Luka Modric and Toni Kroos. But he is still a high-level footballer with 84 international caps and a reading of the game that younger players take years to develop. In a league still growing into itself, he would be one of the best defensive midfielders on the pitch most nights.
Before any of this becomes official, Casemiro has one more major commitment. Carlo Ancelotti has named him in Brazil’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, taking place across the United States, Mexico and Canada this summer. The club move comes after that.
What It Means for Manchester United
United lose a player they will need to replace, but this was always coming. The rebuild under Xabi Alonso is starting from a clear-out, and Casemiro’s departure was confirmed months ago. The club are already looking at midfield options for next season.

For Inter Miami, landing Casemiro alongside Messi would be another statement of intent. The club’s strategy of signing players whose best years in Europe are behind them but who still have genuine quality to offer has worked before. There is no reason to think it will not work again.
The paperwork still needs to be sorted. But the direction of travel is clear.
