Real Madrid went to Seville needing three points. They played well enough to get them. Then the 94th minute happened.
Héctor Bellerín scored deep into stoppage time to earn Real Betis a 1-1 draw, cancelling out Vinícius Júnior’s first-half goal and dealing another serious blow to Madrid’s already fading title hopes. It was the kind of late sucker punch that stays with a dressing room. Madrid had done enough to win. They just didn’t finish it.
The goal itself came from Federico Valverde, who won the ball in midfield and drove forward before trying an ambitious effort from 35 yards. Goalkeeper Álvaro Valles was perhaps surprised by it and failed to hold on. Vinícius reacted quickest and tapped home his 125th goal for the club, arriving in the 17th minute.
From there, Madrid controlled long stretches. They looked comfortable. The job seemed done.
Madrid had the chances and the dominance of the game to put the result to bed long before any late drama came into play. They didn’t, and Betis made them pay.
Bellerín scored in the 94th minute, with Antony, who returns from suspension provides the assist. The stadium erupted. Madrid stood stunned.
There was also a refereeing subplot that will linger. Antony appeared to foul Ferland Mendy in the build-up to Betis’ equaliser, a decision that would more often than not be given. Ricardo Rodríguez also appeared to handle the ball inside the box for Betis, another shout waved away. Madrid felt hard done by, though the counterargument is simple — a team in control should not need the referee to save them.
Mbappé added to the concern, being substituted late after signalling to the bench that he needed to come off. Afterwards, Álvaro Arbeloa said: “Is Mbappé injured? I don’t know, he said he suffers from discomfort, we’ll see.” That uncertainty is the last thing Madrid need right now.
If Barcelona beat Getafe on Saturday, they will move 11 points clear with five matches left. The Clásico at Camp Nou on May 10 now looks set to be the day Barça retain their title. What should have been a meaningful title showdown is turning into a coronation for the other side.
Barcelona leads with 82 points from 32 matches, while Madrid sit on 74 from 33 games. With only 15 points still to play for, Madrid must win every remaining game and hope Barcelona drop points, which is a combination that looks increasingly unlikely.
One moment in the 94th minute. That is the difference between six points and eight. Between hope and mathematics.
For Betis, it is a big point in their push for European football. For Madrid, it is another night where almost good enough turned out to be not good enough at all.
